The Problem

Obesity is virtually an epidemic in this country, and dietary fat has been singled out as the enemy. Many people avoid fat in their diet as if it were the only dietary hazard – yet there are now more obese people than ever before. Clearly, fat isn't the only problem. Substituting refined carbohydrates for high-fat foods provides the fuel for a condition known as syndrome X, which has been identified as a cause of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), high blood pressure, and obesity.

Syndrome X affects roughly 40% of the population. Syndrome X is characterized by insulin resistance, obesity (primarily abdominal), elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, high incidence of diabetes, and a high risk of heart attacks. The central factor in syndrome X is that insulin – the hormone that ushers glucose, protein, fats and minerals into your cells – doesn't work as it's supposed to. This condition is called insulin resistance. People with insulin resistance produce plenty of insulin, but the hormone has lost its efficiency at moving glucose and nutrients into the cells. In fact, with full-blown syndrome X, it takes roughly 300% to 400% more insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels than it does in healthy people. So rather than using glucose as energy, your body converts it into and stores it as fat. In addition, elevated levels of glucose, followed by precipitous falls, make you feel hungrier and thus increase the likelihood of overeating.

This natural protocol provides a system that will help you not only to lose weight but to eliminate syndrome X – improving your insulin efficiency, bringing your lipid profile back to normal, and reducing your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension.

Natural Protocol for Weight Loss

Follow a low-fat diet emphasizing fresh, whole fruits and vegetables, beans and whole grains, nonfat yogurt, skinless chicken, and poached fish. Avoid high-fat dairy, red meat, pork and fatty poultry, processed meats, oils, and margarine. Also avoid carbohydrates that trigger a quick release of insulin, such as breads, processed grains, starchy vegetables (potatoes, winter squash, corn), and sugary snack foods. The carbohydrates recommended above result in a more sustained release of insulin, allowing your body to use glucose for energy rather than storing it as fat and satisfying your hunger as well.

Flush out fat by drinking eight to twelve 8-oz. glasses of pure, filtered water daily. Water is essential for good health, and it's invaluable for achieving permanent weight loss. Drinking a glass of water before meals will aid digestion and help satisfy hunger.

Find a form of aerobic exercise you enjoy and do it at least three times a week for 20-30 minutes. Besides diet, exercise is the most significant factor in improving your metabolism, increasing your insulin sensitivity and maintaining weight loss. Walking is an ideal form of exercise for most people. Work with your physician to set up a plan that's appropriate for you.

Take 500 mcg of GTF chromium per day. Chromium aids the action of insulin and appears to signal the hypothalamus that it's time to stop eating, while vanadyl sulfate enhances insulin sensitivity. If you have diabetes and are under a doctor's care, you may go up to 1,000 mcg of chromium per day with your physician's supervision.
